Single-room ventilation units – a simple route to fresher, healthier indoor air

Ventilation unit in an office

Good air quality matters a great deal for health, well-being and comfort indoors. But how can you ensure fresh air without keeping the windows constantly open or undertaking extensive construction work?

Single-room ventilation units with heat recovery are a modern, energy-saving solution that makes regular air exchange possible without a conventional ducted ventilation system. They suit homes, summer houses, offices and many other spaces.

What are single-room ventilation units?

Single-room ventilation units, also known as decentralised ventilation units, are small ventilation devices installed directly in an external wall of a building.

Their role is to renew the indoor air by extracting used air and bringing in fresh outdoor air. Many of them have a heat exchanger that uses part of the heat in the outgoing air to pre-heat the incoming air.

This improves air quality and reduces heat loss without the need for extensive ventilation ductwork.

How do single-room ventilation units with heat recovery work?

The air can be poor without us particularly noticing. Air quality measurements give a better picture of the conditions, for example by measuring CO₂, temperature and humidity.

Some systems use two or more synchronised units to ensure more even air exchange. Others use different technology to handle the supply and extraction of air.

Main benefits of single-room ventilation units

Single-room ventilation units can suit a wide variety of properties:

  • Flats and detached houses – where air exchange needs improving without extensive construction work.
  • Bedrooms – where fresh air and quiet ventilation matter a great deal.
  • Summer houses – where air renewal can be limited.
  • Offices – to contribute to a better, more comfortable working environment.
  • Basements and storage rooms – where increased air renewal is needed.

The right solution always depends on the size of the space, its layout and the air renewal that needs to be ensured.

Where do single-room ventilation units suit best?

Dust, pollen, cleaning agents and substances from furniture can affect indoor air quality.

Regular cleaning, good airing and quality air filters can help to reduce the amount of airborne particles and other pollutants.

How many units are needed?

There is no single rule that applies to every property.

In some cases one unit can be enough for a defined space. Elsewhere, two or more units working together are needed.

The number depends on, among other things, the size of the property, the number of occupants, how the rooms are used and the airflow required.

That is why it is important to assess the conditions before choosing a ventilation solution.

Single-room units or a conventional ventilation system?

Both solutions have their advantages.

Single-room ventilation units can be convenient where local air exchange is wanted without an extensive distribution duct system.

Central ventilation systems, on the other hand, can suit better when uniform air distribution needs to be ensured throughout a large property or many connected spaces.

The choice depends on the conditions, the needs and the scope of the project.

Better indoor air starts with the right air exchange

We spend a large part of the day indoors. That is why it matters that the air we breathe is renewed regularly.

Single-room ventilation units can be a simple and efficient way to improve air exchange, reduce the build-up of pollutants and create a more comfortable indoor climate without extensive ductwork.
